Hey Oppo, looks like 2019 is going to be my official year of financial hemorrhage.
I have now two car purchases under my belt for the year as well as redoing the tile roof on the house (not shown) and replacing the dying water heater and also a new water softener as that is also dead.
I just have to buy the wife a 2019 Civic before tax season next year. And then I am DONE.
Meet BlueBalls, the Molestor.
Instead of writing a lot of words I figured I’d ask Oppo what Oppo wanted to know. Ask me anything. Can be car related or unrelated, I’ll do my best to answer.
FAQ:
1. I kept the Vette, this is just to ease up on the mileage a tad, I still intend to drive the C7 3-5 times a week
2. No HOA in this neighborhood
3. Interesting cars my neighborhood has: Ford Raptor, BMW Z4, Camaro SS, Dodge Challenger SRT8, WRX, Acura RSX, Honda Prelude, and a Toyota Paseo with a big wing
4. What’s it like? It’s a Korean Fiat Abarth.

How many bodies fit in the trunk?
Does it make turbo noises?
Does it have fun amounts of torque?
Are you also a fan of the 3rd half door?

The Yaris sold 2 hours before I could make it to the dealer to finalize.

1. One, the opening is too small for real murder work
2. Only every single time you give it throttle. It’s nothing but sssssss PSSSHT RRRRRRRMMMMM all day every day. Exhaust when not revving is actually pretty quiet, 1.6L Turbo.
3. It has just enough that if I rev the piss out of it I can do what the Vette does at 1/4 throttle. It’s JUST enough for phoenix streets and good passing clearance.
4. It’s so weird! It’s a standard door, not a suicide door, and it does make entrance on the curbside much simpler, so yes, I am a fan of the door. I’m just not used to it yet.

This seems like a very specific choice, so then ( and I truly mean no offense by the question) why this car? What did you cross shop with?

There are several factors here of several weights (strap in, I’m wordy - Sorry/Not Sorry )
TL;DR Fun tested, Wife approved
1. I was originally looking for a cheap hatch manual to pootle around town in. I was wanting to do this so that parts for wear and tear would be cheap vs the Vette, as well as slightly better MPG and lower thresholds means more slow car fast fun.
2. I also wanted to eventually get my wife warmed up to driving stick. She right now does not want to at all, especially in the C7 which is a monster.
3. Things changed as I brought my wife along for her input. The 09 Yaris sold before she could see it, and the ‘12 xD I drove she thought was a hateful little thing that wouldn’t get out of its own way before being destroyed by a big rig. She didn’t want to be in it, with me or without me.
4. I’m pretty adamant about the hatch + stick requirement, which put a damper on a lot of potential searches. There are plenty of manual sedans.
5. Potential candidates included: Current-gen Honda Fit manual (too pricey, or too high mileage for price , or existing supply lacked features), Fiesta ST - dealers asking for way too much considering they are not selling well, Focus ST - same deal - I even considered a Civic Si coupe or sedan since they do have back seats and doors and they are also priced high in my area, as well as most of them being completely abused. I thought about just buying a brand new Corolla Hatch and even considered the 13k Scion iM hatch manual they had down there.
6. I don’t really want to fix German or Mini and I won’t have time to do it all on my own and get parts in on the cheap. (I lack experience here, I buy Japanese a lot.)
7. I’d been keeping the Avondale Toyota guy on the hook for multiple days trying out cars left and right trying to get one that fits me the way I want to. I hit up a couple of other places but their service wasn’t as good and I was really looking for a Toyota stick hatch so I kept going back there.
8. The Veloster Turbo happened to be there at the very upper bound on my price range. It’s also fairly new and has modern safety standards built in and most importantly it passed the wife test with flying colours. It also drove quick enough that I didn’t feel like I was missing a lot of power.
9. The blue is also really nice, even if the paint isn’t perfect. First blue car I’ve ever owned.
10. I think i JUST might get my wife to drive a stick at some point with this car. I definitely would not have been able to with the others. The rest are higher up in the price brackets although they are more feature rich.

I absolutely love my 2016 Veloster Turbo. I've got the same color one. I had a 2012 Veloster before this one. An Orange one.

Congrats looks like a fun little car. I’ve been eyeballing the Ve lo ster-N for my next car after my 2013 Sonic ( it’s a 6mt turbo, to my defense.) I think it would be hard for me to downsize so much.
I hope they bring the i 30- N to the states. I would love for Chevy to shoehorn the 2.0t in the Sonic, but from what I’ve read it sounds like the Sonic might be discontinued so Chevy can make more SUVs that don’t sell. S tupid new blazer is stupid. Really Really want a Sonic SS hatch tho.
Anyways, congrats on the new Hyundai. They have a 100k warranty, right?

The 100k warranty is only transferable up to 60k/5 yrs for the second owner, but that leaves me with some wiggle room as it is at 46k miles right now. And thanks! It’s a good car - but I also did look at the Sonic (I think the RS trim is the turbo? can’t remember right now) and there was a brand new manual one unsold for 9k which got bought before I could get my hands on it.

This is pretty interesting, I too have a 16 r spec but in white, and I also have a c6 that’s been modded a bit (cam). The rspec is a cool unique car and having a toddler, the 3 door makes it a breeze. Only thing that gets me is that I don’t really get good mpg because I lean in boost so much.

Yep, I’m always boosting around and I’m averaging about 24 mpg right now - only a smidge higher than the Chevy . Hello fellow Corvette owner!

Your take is surprisingly similar to mine. I have been shopping for a Rally Edition for a few weeks. Same basic car with special wheels and un maintainable paint. Something affordable, interesting, fun enough, and manual for my 18yo son to learn on. It was interesting to read through the comments on Jalopnik about them from a couple years ago.

I had been avoiding Korean cars but this ride is genuinely pleasing.
